Special Issue on: “Query and Inference Across Multiple Ontologies”
Guest Editor: Professor Baowen Xu, Southeast University, China
Ontology is formal, explicit specification of a shared conceptualisation and plays a central role on the Semantic Web as a tool of knowledge representing and sharing. It is impossible to construct or standardise a single all-powerful ontology because of the decentralised nature of the Web. There are large numbers of heterogeneous ontologies on the Web, and they may express various views on the same domain with different characters and motives. Many Web applications are necessary for working with multiple ontologies and face the heterogeneity problems. However, for the heterogeneous, distributed and dynamic characteristics of multiple ontologies, traditional query and inference technologies, which are the basics of the web application, cannot satisfy the requirements of current applications based on multiple ontologies.
To advance the performance of the current Semantic Web application in multiple ontologies environments, improving the current query and inference technologies and developing new query and inference theories across multiple ontologies have been new challenges. This special issue gathers the latest research and development of efficient techniques in query and inference across multiple ontologies.
Subject CoverageThe topics relevant to this Special Issue may include, but are not limited to:
- Management of ontology mapping
- Ontology representation languages
- Query languages for multiple ontologies
- Methods to find alignment and mapping
- Multiple ontology-based inference and learning
- Multiple ontology-based query processing and optimisation
- Application of description logics in multi-ontology environments
- Applications and tools in query and inference across multiple ontologies
