Globalisation of economy and the outsourcing of manufacturing and information technology have created significant changes in national job markets and particularly in education and training of the next generation of the US workforce. In recent years, the higher cost of energy coupled with the increase in the cost of labour, healthcare and legal fees have presented new challenges for American manufacturers in global markets. Failure to achieve high competitiveness will result in the loss of high-paying jobs across the economy.
The aim of this special issue is to identify the future research issues for the industrial engineering discipline in light of these global challenges.
