Special Issue on: “The Evolution of the Entrepreneurial Engine in the Global Knowledge Economy”

The last decade has seen some remarkable changes in the entrepreneurial environment. For example, the internet has altered the way in which entrepreneurs can access information and markets. The world has also seen the net creation of some 30 million new SMEs in China, about the same as the total number of SMEs in Europe and USA combined. Innovative entrepreneurs are known to make an important contribution to the engine of sustainable growth. They are a major contributor to the creation of jobs, wealth, and competitive advantage. A small proportion of high growth firms, contributes disproportionately to this entrepreneurial engine.

This issue focuses on the evolution of the entrepreneurial engine in the context of the changes taking place in the global economy, and especially the knowledge economy. This has important implications, at firm, region, nation and international levels. This collection seeks to address a broad range of interdisciplinary questions, for example:

• at firm level - Which entrepreneurs and SMEs have been best able to ride the wave of knowledge globalisation? As the web becomes common place, are SMEs finding it easier to expand and compete across borders?
• at regional level - Are regional differences in access to knowledge important in determining the differences in the creation of jobs and wealth? Are SME clusters emerging in a virtual world which is less dependent on regional physical proximity?
• and at national and international levels - Is the entrepreneurial engine becoming more, or less, important in the creation of wealth, jobs and competitive advantage? What are the policy lessons for creating a conducive environment for the entrepreneurial engine, locally and globally?
