Special Issue on: “Measuring R&D”
Guest Editors: Dr. Matti Sievänen and Mikko Varila, Tampere University of Technology, Finland
Product innovation and R&D are considered to be the central sources of competitive advantage and crucial drivers for economic growth. Managing product development is a major challenge because of its inherent uncertain, complex and multidisciplinary nature. Measurement of R&D has always posed great problems due to the multiformity of R&D activities and the fact that the outputs are often intangible and are realised only over a long term. Furthermore, the success of an R&D project can be viewed differently by different stakeholders. The result of a project can be a success even if the project itself was a failure, and vice versa. A better understanding of the R&D function and its measurement can help to make R&D more productive.
The objective of this special issue is to investigate and describe different ways of measuring R&D, and to examine how measurement affects R&D performance. Thus, it aims at advancing our understanding of the R&D function and helping managers to design and implement R&D measurement systems.
