Interdisciplinary Environmental Review
Special Issue on: "Interdisciplinary Approaches to Environmental Challenges for Urban Centres"
Guest Editor:
Shane Epting, University of North Texas, USA
Rapid urbanisation requires managing resources and energy demands, addressing intensified inequalities, and mitigating the effects of climate change. Progressive urban design paradigms and the developing subfield, “Philosophy of the City,” offer insights into the nature of and solutions to such problems. The aim of this special issue is to examine theoretical and applied dimensions of urban issues. Topics of interest are open, but submissions should reveal new directions of agenda-setting research.
The issue will carry revised and substantially extended versions of selected papers presented at the 20th International Interdisciplinary Conference on the Environment, but we also strongly encourage researchers unable to participate in the conference to submit articles for this call.
Subject CoverageSuitable topics include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Competing planning movements and environmental considerations
- Environmental aspects of smart grids and cities
- Beyond LEED certification
- Material flows: management, measurements and assessment models
- Environmental and public health impacts of public space: improving mobility, highway removal and repurposing projects
- Shifting attitudes in sustainability and resilience thinking
- The question of stewardship in urban planning
- Ecological perspectives of planning without borders
- Community participation in environmental disaster relief and rebuilding
- The role of local government in resource allocation
- Environmental responsibility in emerging participatory budgeting movements
- Urban agriculture and food systems
- Masterplanning and environmental determinism
- Justice issues in resource distribution, pollution, waste management and transportation infrastructure
