Off-road vehicle engineering is the study of the overall performance of a machine in relation to its operating environment – the terrain. Terrain-vehicle mechanics is concerned with the tractive performance of a vehicle over unprepared terrain, ride quality over unprepared surfaces, handling, obstacle negotiation, water crossing and other related topics. The aim of this scope is to provide guiding principles for the rational development, design and evaluation of off-road vehicles.
The modelling of vehicle behaviour, characterisation of the mechanical properties pertinent to vehicle mobility, and the mechanics of vehicle-terrain interaction is a substantial task. As the performance of off-road vehicles over unprepared terrain constitutes a central issue in vehicle mobility, this special issue will focus on the study of vehicle-terrain interaction, particularly those of kinetics and kinematics of off-road vehicles from the modeling and optimisation perspectives.
Vehicle motions are largely due to the shear forces generated between tyres and the road, and therefore the tyre model is an essential part of the mathematical model. The tyre model must produce realistic shear forces during braking, acceleration, cornering and combinations on a range of surface conditions. Rapid advances have been made in the field of vehicle kinetics and kinematics in terms of improving steering, suspension and traction control systems. Optimising vehicle performance has led to the development of new and more efficient systems.
Some attributes or aspects of vehicle dynamics are purely aerodynamic or based on geometric mass and its distribution and tyres. We invite investigators to contribute their original research articles as well as review articles focused on modelling and optimiaation of kinematics and kinetics of off-road vehicle mobility and performance by artificial intelligence. Particular attention will be given to research into and enhancements of emerging technologies dealing with the modelling of vehicle dynamics and optimisation of the associated systems while traversing over irregular terrains. Soft computing-based modelling tools such as artificial neural networks, support vector regression, fuzzy logic, adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference systems and optimisation approaches of heuristic and meta-heuristics are particularly welcome.
