Development of range free three dimensional localisation in wireless sensor networks

Abstract: In the present work, a range free three dimensional localisation technique using only crude RSSI information is presented. The range free localisation algorithms have shown limited accuracy and to achieve high accuracy very large number of specialised anchor nodes is required; these anchor nodes also add to the cost of the system. In proposed solution distributed localisation nodes use crude RSSI to approximate their minimum and maximum distance limits with respect to anchor nodes. The approximation involves a simple binary search algorithm. The crude distance limits help form the feasibility region of the node w.r.t. anchor nodes. The feasibility region coordinates serve as initial particles in particle swarm optimisation (PSO) to solve the optimisation problem of minimising localisation error. It was observed that based on simple calculations, nodes can be localised to a better accuracy compared to the existing algorithms and require fewer anchor nodes with limited communication range.
