Abstract: This study is based on three perspectives from the strategic management literature - organisational learning, resource-based view of the firm, and organisational configurations, to develop a framework for hot topics in strategic human resource management. By merging the criteria for sustained competitive advantage with key organisational learning processes knowledge creation, transfer and institutionalisation, we analyse how strategic human resource management may facilitate the development and maintenance of a competitive advantage for the firm. By developing appropriate human resource systems firms can create and deploy their most strategic resource organisational knowledge. In addition, the utility of the configurational approach for the analysis of human resources systems and their relationship with adaptation, renewal and organisational learning is considered.
