Abstract: Minimisation of crop loss has been a great concern to the steel makers since the inception of hot strip rolling process. It has been observed that the loss of steel due to essential cropping of transfer bar at hot strip mill is significantly high, in the absence of a reliable strip speed feedback to crop shear, which crops the irregular ends of hot strips. Therefore, an innovative transfer bar speed measuring system has been developed in-house based on the principle of machine vision. On successful implementation of this system, average yield loss due to crop-cut has been brought down, and thus, improvement of gross yield of HSM resulted in substantial recurring savings.
