Abstract: Facilities planning is a critical issue in today's competitive manufacturing and service sectors. With rapidly increasing global competition, elimination of waste and continuous improvement of productivity is vital that greatly depends on how people plan, organise and utilise the facilities in an organisation. In facility layout problems, objective functions are modelled with different objectives that include minimisation of cost or flow of materials, maximisations of closeness rewards, etc. This paper proposes a mathematical model with a continuous representation of distance-based adjacency matrix. The resulting exact model will consider every all-rectangular-department solutions. A nature-inspired firefly algorithm is applied to find out the solution of the model.
