Management of nuclear power plant emergency: a case of Korea

Abstract: This study aimed to show how the management of nuclear power plant emergencies in Korea may be improved. 'Self-interest' and 'all-interests' management approaches of various stakeholders: the nuclear power plant operating company, local governments, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), and residents, were compared. From an international perspective, the effective management of a nuclear power plant emergency in a local community is outlined through qualitative content analysis. It was observed that the above-mentioned four stakeholders have not approached radiological emergencies as a societal issue, but rather as their own business- or work-related matter. Thus, a major finding of this study is that the local community must reform the current self-interest management by incorporating all-interests management in the near future.
