The role of ethnic networks in export activities: the case of Australia

Abstract: New exporting opportunities frequently arise serendipitously via interpersonal contacts and networks. There is increasing recognition that local ethnic business associations, and their respective communities, can play a vital role as another international networking and export promotion link contributing to the development and implementation of a national export plan. This study explores the nature of some of Australia's ethnic chambers of commerce, their role in promoting exports, opportunities for their effective work with government, and best practices for enhancing their activities. The study also seeks to establish ways of consolidating and enhancing the chambers' role as an integral part of social dynamics and network in international business.
