Abstract: The increase of deaths by cardiac arrest each year makes the computer-aided diagnosis a necessity for prognosis of cardiovascular diseases. The cardiac MRI is an imaging technique commonly used for the heart's exploration. In order to analyse the cardiac function in MR images, the segmentation phase of the left ventricle (LV) is a necessary step. Wherefore, thresholding, region growing and active contour model are combined in our approach to obtain the LV form exactly. Finally, the end-diastolic volume (EDV), end-systolic volume (ESV) and ejection fraction (EF) are calculated for the LV function quantification. The whole process is applied to the heart database, where the expert's manual contour is available. Our approach leads to satisfying results with a correlation of 97% for EDV, 96% for ESV and 89% for EF between the proposed method and expert's parameters. They confirm the accuracy of the approach and its eventual aid in diagnosis.
