Abstract: Due to the fact that learners' mastery of English language is not taken into account in the current methods, resulting in higher error and lower credibility of the assessment results, a formative assessment method of English language application ability based on consistency assessment is proposed. According to the principles of formative assessment, the implementation conditions of formative assessment include clear assessment objectives, diversified assessment means, determination of assessment criteria and timely feedback of information. Specific assessment tasks are defined and a theoretical model of autonomous learning is constructed to realise the assessment of English language application ability. Taking the students of two classes of automobile maintenance major in college as the test objects; the final assessment scheme is set. Experimental results show that the proposed method can effectively reduce the assessment error and improve the credibility of the assessment results.
