Abstract: The EI literature is still at nascent stage in explaining the impact of emotional intelligence on virtual team performance. Members of the global virtual team infrequently involve in face-to-face interaction with each other and therefore face challenges that do not relate to the traditional team. Thus the purpose of this paper is to review and reconcile the papers related to Effect of EI on virtual teams of service representatives. This literature review analysed the relationship between effects of emotional intelligence on performance of virtual teams. This paper further examines the quality and scope of current research studies related to the importance of EI in virtual teams. This study is based on preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Eighteen relevant primary studies published since the year 2000 were identified and analysed. These studies emphasised the relationship between EI and the performance of virtual teams, although there is a dearth of quality research study specifically, experimental and longitudinal studies, which impedes a better understanding of the underlying theory of EI in virtual team members.
