Abstract: This paper studies end-to-end delay and backlog in a hybrid vehicular ad-hoc network (VANET). The probabilistic upper bounds for delay and backlog are obtained instead of evaluating the numerical results for delay and backlog. To obtain the bounds, a queueing network model is proposed representing the message dissemination scheme in the hybrid VANET architecture. The network model is solved using stochastic network calculus methodology. The novelty of this paper lies in the fact that the arrival and service processes in the proposed queueing network are assumed to be self-similar and heavy-tailed distributed. Further, a comparison study with the exponential arrival and service times is also performed to validate the appropriateness of using heavy-tailed characteristics. In addition, a comparative study of hybrid VANET with the other two conventional architectures of VANET, i.e., ad-hoc network only and cellular network only, is also provided in the paper.
