Abstract: This study aimed to analyse the competitiveness of two container ports located in the South of Brazil for the imports of containerised cargo to the Serra Gaucha region. For this purpose, the comparative evaluations of Tecon Rio Grande and Portonave conducted by importers were assessed and the most important attributes were identified through multiple regression analysis. The two ports were then compared on the statistically significant attributes (port tariffs, shipping calls and port infrastructure) based on the available evidence on their websites, government agencies and shipowners. In general terms, the results indicated similarity between the two ports. Port tariffs were found to be a critical issue for Tecon Rio Grande, since this was the only factor in which this terminal was considered worse or much worse than Portonave. On the other hand, the commercial performance in the studied region is a point to be considered by Portonave.
