Abstract: This article derives the throughput of simultaneously transmitting and reflecting reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (STAR-RIS) when the source harvests power from the sun to be able to transmit data to two users Ut and Ur. Ut and Ur are respectively located at the transmitting and reflecting spaces of STAR-RIS. The harvested power from the sun is proportional to the sum of random Gaussian radiation intensity and a deterministic radiation that depends on month and time t expressed in hour. We compute the harvested energy as well as the signal to interference plus noise ratio (SINR). The harvesting duration is optimised to maximise the throughput. We also study the effects of harvesting time t and the number of elements of STAR-RIS denoted by N. STAR-RIS with 64 elements offers up to 47 dB versus the use of N = 8 elements.
