Areas of worklife as predictors of the burnout syndrome

Abstract: This paper aims at presenting the results of a research which analyses if the factors of the six areas of worklife that are present in areas of worklife scale - AWS tool - workload, control, reward, community, fairness and values - are confirmed as organisational predictors for the three dimensions of burnout syndrome measured by the Maslach Burnout Inventory General Survey MBI-GS tool - exhaustion, cynicism and efficacy from the translation and transcultural adaptation in the Brazilian context. Data has been collected from 558 professors from public and private universities. The results supported relationships between the six areas of worklife and the three dimensions of Burnout in the translated and adapted model. The use of this assessment model allows the structuring of intervention programs that can focus on aspects related to employees' autonomy in the face of their responsibilities, their workload, which can be manageable, their more adequate financial and social acknowledgment, their social relations that need to be developed, their aspects related to fair decisions in the work environment and the congruency between organisational and individual values.
