Process-product risk propagation in a product development: from framework to simulator

Abstract: Development processes, from conceptual design to manufacturing, are the ones defining product characteristics. Due to this connection between design and manufacturing processes and their products, risk management should have an integrated view on the two. Studying a process or a product without considering both aspects cannot be satisfactory in modern production. However, risk management is usually product or process oriented. This paper aims at making the connection between the two. A framework, followed by the model and a simulator for integrated product and process risk management is proposed. The main goal is to represent process influences on product performance risk and its propagation through the product. The solution is based on function-behaviour-structure (FBS) framework extended to consider process influence and modified susceptible-infected-recovered (SIR) agent-based simulation for risk propagation. The application and the results are illustrated through the academic example of a hair dryer development.
