Women in national development: the challenges of recession and corruption in Nigeria

Abstract: This paper presented the issue of women in national development in Nigeria at the period of economic downturn cum corruption. It presented (as a foundation) the historical and peculiar issue of women in the world and the responses of the United Nations in advancing womenfolk so as to achieve optimal development in all nations. It focused further on the description of the current status of women in Nigeria in terms of some indices such as population percentage, literacy, earning income power, land ownership, poverty, and participation in the labour force; the response of Nigeria in line with the aspirations of the United Nations to achieve gender equality; the issues of recession and corruption in Nigeria, especially as they affect women; and suggested strategic ways in which women can overcome the challenges of recession and corruption so as to participate in national development.
