Abstract: Non-exhaust emission is a considerable issue in overall environmental pollution. The sources of non-exhaust pollution are tire dust, brake and clutch friction material wear dust, wear and tear of mechanical parts etc. The bad effects of these are not only on plants but also on aquatic and human beings. World Health Organization (WHO) noted Cu, Pb, Sb, Ni, Zn, Cr, cadmium, and asbestos are toxic elements. In this work, low metallic non-asbestos organic (NAO) friction material properties are investigated by manufacturing with compression moulding technique and its characterisation is carried out with help of ASTM standards. Also, the morphological and thermal behaviour of developed friction material is evaluated by SEM and TGA methods. The results of developed parent friction materials are compared with commercial brake friction material. Minimisations of toxic metallic elements at sources reduce non-exhaust pollution as well as the bad effect on the environment.
