Investigation on polyaniline synthesised by camphor sulphonic acid; optical, thermal, structural, and electrical properties

Abstract: The influence of camphor sulphonic acid (CSA) on the preparation and optical, electrical, and structural features of polyaniline in emeraldine salt (PANI) was investigated in this study. PANI and CSA doped PANI were developed through the chemical polymerisation of aniline in the acid medium at ambient temperature. The physical and structural features, band gap values, electrical conductivity, and thermal properties were studied to determine the interaction between PANI and the CSA. Structural features of the PANI and CSA doped PANI were determined using Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), UV-visible (UV-vis), X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), 4-point probe, then thermogravimetry analysis (TGA). The UV-vis demonstrated the associations between the PANI matrix and CSA anions, increased crystal conductance and the numbers of load vectors, and decreased the band defect frequency. FT-IR spectroscopy evaluated the intensity proportion of quinoid/benzenoid. The morphology was transformed from typical nanoflakes to nanopetals and nanorods by adding CSA acid. The TGA reported the influence of CSA on the thermal stability of PANI.The maximum conductivity was also estimated as 2.7 S/cm, which is related to CSA doped PANI.
