Abstract: This paper reports on a student project, conducted outside university premises during the COVID-19 pandemic, where a shallow well was drilled first, to which an elevated water-storage tank and a pumping system were added. The well was drilled manually using an earth auger fitted with a height-adjustable T-bar, subject of a non-provisional patent application of the authors. A six-inch diameter PVC pipe provided with narrow slots served as well casing. Because of the reduced water yield, a submersible miniature pump, powered intermittently by a timer, was employed to raise the water into the storage tank. For convenient lawn and garden irrigation, the water tank was fitted with one smaller external pump and one higher capacity submersible pump, each equipped its own flexible hose. The setbacks experienced as the design was implemented are summarised in a lessons-learned section, as required by this journal, together with explanations on how these flaws were addressed.
