Abstract: The purpose of this study is to investigate consumers' intention to use self-checkout systems in a retailing context using three different theories, namely the theory of planned behaviour (TPB), the technology acceptance model (TAM) and the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology (UTAUT). This study used cross-sectional data collected from university students (N = 283) to validate the proposed hypotheses to compare the multiple theoretical models by using partial least square structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM). Results showed that the UTAUT outperformed the TPB and the TAM in terms of predictive power. This study contributed to the body of knowledge by investigating the explanatory power and predictive relevance of three different theoretical models in understanding and predicting consumers' intention to use self-checkout within a retailing context.
