Investigation of graphene-based biodegradable acid oil as a plausible green metal working fluid in micro-drilling of Nimonic 90 superalloy

Abstract: Nickel-based superalloys like Nimonic 90, play a crucial role in aero engine industries due to their exceptional thermal and corrosion resistance. Micro-drilling is essential for manufacturing engine components, but it poses challenges, particularly early tool damage in the case of nickel-based superalloys. Conventional mineral oil-based metal working fluids (MWFs) contribute to environmental and health issues. This study explores the use of biodegradable acid oil as an eco-friendly MWF in micro-drilling thermal barrier coated Nimonic 90. Tungsten carbide drills with Titanium aluminium nitride coating were employed under dry, flood, and nanofluid minimum quantity lubrication (NMQL) conditions at varying spindle speeds. Results indicate that NMQL, especially with a 0.5% weight concentration of graphene, achieves the lowest drilling temperature and minimal tool wear, making it a promising environmentally friendly alternative for micro-drilling nickel-based superalloys like Nimonic 90.
