Abstract: Wound infection is a major cause of morbidity and mortality as treatment of large wound surface with prevention of infection is a major challenge. We developed a simple method to fabricate a low-cost anti-microbial starch-based polymer film embedded with silver nanoparticles (Ag-NP) generated via green synthesis from tea extract with readily available ingredients. Fabricated Ag-NP was characterised by UV-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopy (peak at 436 nm), transmission electron microscopy (diameter of 20.6 ± 11.8 nm), zeta potential (-18 mV) and X-ray diffraction study. The tea derived organic molecules in Ag-NP were confirmed by Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The anti-microbial efficacy of the polymer embedded Ag-NP showed significant zone of inhibition against both gram-positive Staph aureus (22 ± 1.6 mm) and gram negative Pseudomona aeruginosa (16 ± 1.4 mm). This study showed anti-microbial efficacy of a low-cost starch-based polymer film containing Ag-NP with anti-oxidant biomolecules of green tea which can be easily fabricated and used for wound dressing.
