Advancing research, innovation, and commercialisation strategies confronting the challenge of Varroa mites in Australia

Abstract: The recent inclusion of Varroa mites on Australia's roster of invasive species highlights the urgent need for proactive management strategies to protect vulnerable species. With eradication proving increasingly difficult post-infestation, Australia must now explore a range of strategies, drawing on global experiences and fostering innovation through dedicated research and development. Australia's approach to Varroa mite management must adopt a global perspective, integrating lessons learned from diverse contexts. Concurrently, a strong commitment to research and development is crucial for fostering homegrown innovations. This comprehensive approach aims not only to address immediate challenges posed by Varroa mites but also to establish enduring resilience within Australia's ecosystems and beekeeping industries for the long haul. The study concludes by recommending research and development initiatives to tackle the challenges posed by Varroa mites in Australia and detailing how stakeholders such as government agencies, researchers, beekeepers, and environmental organisations can collaborate effectively to implement the outlined strategies.
