Investigation of groundwater contamination in physical systems mathematically using differential transform method

Abstract: A mathematical modelling-based study has been developed to model the impact of groundwater contamination in aquifer-aquitard systems in different geological formation. Different mathematical functions are used to depict dispersion and velocity in different medium. Boundary conditions are often unpredictable due to complex geometry and nature of the aquifer. Initial condition is quite easy to obtain so different types of initial conditions have been considered. Advection dispersion equation (ADE) has been used to measure the contaminant concentration in the aquifer-aquitard system. Along with the reduction of the computational work, the differential transform method (DTM) used to solve linear and nonlinear initial value partial differential equations (PDEs). Two dimensional DTM has been used to solve the advection dispersion equation semi-analytically and MATLAB is used to plot the solution. Different dispersion, velocity and initial conditions shows different impact in the contaminant concentration profile and also impact of space and time is quite visible.
