Visualising the arc-shaped rib bone embedded in wood shavings: advancing toward microwave imaging systems for preclinical orthopaedic applications

Abstract: Microwave illumination has no ionising radiation effects and high-power signal components. Unlike conventional devices, their usage for continuous screening in living tissues is not limited. Conventional devices have two problems. First, they use high-power ionised signals. Second, the deformation degree is calculated manually. Their usage is limited, and computed deformation degree depends on operator. During a scoliosis, the backbone should be scanned frequently to plan treatment. The proposed preclinical microwave imaging system (MIS) aims to address these main issues and is suitable for visualising scoliosis. The imaging technique can reconstruct the microwave raw images using scattered waves. It uses only circular data analysis, not linear, and gives accurate, reliable, and fast results. The algorithm automatically calculates the deformation angle of the C-type bone. Position and deformation angle of the actual bone target are determined with an error rate of 2% and 3.5%, respectively, compared to the actual measurement.
