Abstract: The reduced effective mass of cadmium sulphide nanoparticles formed by Successful Ion Layered Adsorption and Reaction (SILAR) has been studied. It is found that the value of the reduced effective mass of the charge carriers in CdS nanoparticles is greater than that in bulk crystals. The results of this investigation show that in some cases the band gap of the nanoparticles is less than in bulk crystals. This is explained by the changing lattice parameters in nanoparticles from the centre to the surface.
