Preface to the theme: Supporting university spinoffs to realise their global potential
by Peter Van Der Sijde, Paul Kirwan
International Journal of Globalisation and Small Business (IJGSB), Vol. 3, No. 2, 2009

Abstract: The creation of new innovative enterprises, the support for spinoff companies and the development of startups are important priorities for the stimulation of economic growth, both within the European Union (EU) and worldwide. In the period of 1999–2006, a European programme, the Pilot Action of Excellence in Innovative Start-ups (PAXIS), dealt with these themes by gathering and transferring new ideas and policy recommendations throughout the continent. As part of this programme, universities and other institutions were invited to propose projects that developed original support models for innovative startup creation and transfer their successful concepts to other regions. One such project was GlobalStart. This preface introduces papers dealing with GlobalStart issues.
