Abstract: A process engineering problem is considered to be a multiple objective problem if it is characterised by conflicting objectives such as cost, operatability, and productivity. Though many methods for the solution of multiple-objective optimisation problems have been developed before, they do not adequately represent Decision Makers (DMs) internal utility function. A method for the solution of Multiple Objective Decision Making (MODM) problem is presented in this paper. The method is based on the evaluation of the trade-offs between the conflicting objectives, and provides a means of assessing the decision makers internal utility function. An extension of the method leads to a new formulation for compromise programming.
