Abstract: Inspection is defined as determining the conformance of a product to specifications or requirements. In general, inspection can be classified as done by attributes or by variables. Inspection by attribute is carried out with the use of gauges, resulting in a 'Yes' or 'No' (Go, No-Go) decision. With attribute inspection, decision making could become challenging in borderline cases, relying entirely on the subjective judgement of the operator. The consequences of a bad decision could be significant when the result of inspection is used to control a process. This paper presents a fuzzy rule-based in-process decision-making system for attribute inspection of a component gear ring (pinion) manufactured by a gear-hobbing process. Analysis of the performance of the proposed system in a simulated environment indicates that it improves the decision-making process in the presence of ambiguity, thus resulting in reduced manufacturing and defect costs.
