Abstract: Over the past decade, the interaction between industry and universities or independent research centres has become of increasing importance. This tendency is especially remarkable in the field of microelectronics, which is an 'enabling technology' being applied in virtually every industrial sector. As a result of such closer interaction, universities and independent research centres have been adapting their research and 'valorization' strategies, based on an iterative process of technology-driven and market-pull oriented approaches. The evaluation is commented on and illustrated by the case of the Interuniversity Microelectronics Center (IMEC), Belgium, a large independent R&D centre, active in the field of microelectronics.
