The PROMIS project: industry and university learning together

Abstract: The inherent differences that exist between an industrial organization and academia are usually a barrier preventing these two parties from working together. A case where these differences have been bridged is reported here. The case involved a study on advanced techniques for project management that was conducted jointly by a large aerospace company and a school of business administration managing a program in technology management. The study was called PROMIS (Project Management Improvement Study) and it was the first step in a long-term program aimed at improving the project management capabilities of the organization. The paper describes the differences between the parties, their objectives for the project, the methodology, and the benefits gained.
