Abstract: The objective of this paper is to demonstrate the power of appropriate engineering analysis in providing important contributions to competition evaluation. Part 1, in this issue, discusses the kind of analysis needed, defines key concepts used in the analysis (root structure, criticality and natural limits), and describes the methodology as a sequence of steps. Part 2 ''Examples of competition analysis'' will show by way of examples how to identify the root structure, find the critical problems, and determine the natural limits. Part 3 ''Case study in competition analysis'' will illustrate how the engineering analysis is used in conjunction with marketing projections.
