Abstract: Chatter presents one of the main problems in degrading the quality of machined surfaces limiting tool life, productivity and impairing tolerances. Chatter in milling and turning operations has been extensively analysed, but drilling operations have been largely neglected due to the complexity of drilling tools and problems that develop in the modelling of the tool. In this paper, an overview of chatter vibrations and chatter suppression in drilling has been presented. In addition, the problem of chatter analysis and suppression in micromachining processes is receiving significant attention. The differences at the macro and micro scales are explained and provide an understanding of the research direction concerning microdrilling and milling operations.
