Abstract: Nitric acid leaching processes were evaluated for removal of heavy metals from samples of residual sludge from an industrial and municipal wastewater plant. The study showed that an acid:water ratio of 1:1 and a nitric acid concentration of 2 mol 1−1 gave efficient removal of 86.7%, 100% and 100% of copper, nickel and arsenic.
