Abstract: Owing to both outstanding structural flexibility and redox-activity, manganese dioxide (MnO2) is an important functional oxide with distinctive properties and wide applications in catalysts, molecular sieves, electric field-effect transistors, biosensors, and especially as electrode materials in Li/MnO2 batteries. For exploring the potentials of MnO2, therefore, numerous processes have been developed over the past few years towards synthesising MnO2 nanoparticles with different morphologies. In this paper, we will outline our work on the preparation of nanosized MnO2 in solution, their properties and applications for performing various redox reactions. Further, the use of surfactant micelles will be highlighted as, in favourable cases; the micelles help the redox reactions by bringing the reactants in a close proximity due to hydrogen bonding.
