Abstract: The purpose of this study was to investigate whether a bystander effect is manifested in a large cell lung tumoural cell line (QU-DB). For induction of a bystander effect in non-irradiated cells the 'medium transfer' technique was employed, and to observe the effect the cytokinesis-block micronucleus assay was applied. Results showed that irradiated and bystander cells demonstrated higher numbers of micronucleated (MN) per 1000 cells in comparison with control cells. The MN yield was dose dependent, and the MN yield in bystander cells that received medium from 4.0 Gy irradiated cells was approximately equal to that from 0.5 Gy directly irradiated cells. We conclude that the QU-DB cell line can generate and transmit bystander signals.
