Abstract: This paper studies an 802.11 communication system covering a light urban area. The system consists of seven access points. It is assumed that the failure of the access point in the centre of the area under study is more damaging than the failure of the peripheral access points. A general performability model is developed to quantitatively assess the impact of using more reliable equipment in the centre access point or reducing the repair time of the centre access point. Furthermore, a special parameter is incorporated in the performability model to account for the critical nature of the failure of the centre access point. It is also shown via a case study how to use this model as a design tool besides its obvious use as an analysis tool.
