Abstract: In this study, a new approach to simulate the exhaust silencer is studied to improve the acoustics performance of a vehicle. A combined one-/three-dimensional approach is developed to carry out the simulation of exhaust silencer under working conditions. The acoustic performance of silencer is computed with three-dimensional method in frequency domain, and the other parts of the engine and exhaust system are calculated with one-dimensional method in time domain. The insertion loss of the exhaust silencer is then calculated with a combined model. With the present approach, the insertion loss of an exhaust silencer with catalytic converter is calculated. The simulation results agree well with the experimental results, which validates the reliability and accuracy of the present approach.
