Abstract: Gas jets find cooling and heating applications in industry. The swirling of jets improves flow mixing in the jet and modifies the flow structure significantly. In the present study, an isothermal submerged swirling air jet expanding into still air is considered and entropy generation, due to fluid friction in the flow field, is formulated and computed for different values of swirl number. It is found that swirling reduces the axial momentum of a jet, in which case jet expansion along the axial direction is suppressed with an increasing swirl number. Total entropy generation reduces sharply with an increasing swirl number particularly for S = 0:05-0.25.
