A strategy driven approach for manufacturing systems design task selection

Abstract: As part of the research into a computer aided manufacturing systems design framework, a conceptual architecture for the integration of design tasks and system modelling activities has been defined. This paper describes the provision of a design process planning facility within this architecture, for the selection of suitable design tasks, activities, tools and evaluation criteria derived from project terms of reference. The facility assists the designers to develop the project objectives and evaluation criteria and supports the selection and configuration of a design approach, using the concept of Manufacturing System Design Task Documents. This paper aims to present the conceptual structure and clearly specify the issues involved for the selection of design tasks and the flexible support for their adaptive application in practice.
