The effect of situational constraints on workforce performance and JIT implementation: an empirical study

Abstract: This study examines the impact of situational performance constraining factors on workforce performance in a just-in-time (JIT) environment of US manufacturers. A review of literature related to situational performance constraining factors is presented. The link between situational constraints effects on worker performance in manufacturing and the impact on JIT implementation success is explored. A field study of fifteen firms was conducted followed by an empirical study of 130 US manufacturing firms. The findings of the study are discussed in the context of the identification and elimination of situational performance constraints in JIT manufacturing.
