Abstract: A numerical procedure is presented for the time-transient analysis of the thermomechanical phenomena occurring during steel welding processes and of the residual stresses. For this purpose, at each time step the temperature field is calculated taking into account temperature-dependent thermal properties; then for subintervals of each time step elastoplastic analyses are carried out considering again temperature-dependent mechanical properties. The thermal load is simulated using a procedure based on Gaussian heat source surfaces. The time integration of the non-linear equation of heat transport is carried out using a three-level scheme, with variable step sizes. A numerical example of practical interest is shown, for which experimental data are available.
