Abstract: Traditionally, the process design of the turning operation focused on the objective of optimising the economics of the process; while quality issues are dealt with separately. Recently, some research utilised Taguchi's loss function (TLF) to represent deviations from target quality levels by equivalent costs that can be integrated into the process design economic models. One shortcoming of that approach is the difficulty of estimating accurate quality loss coefficients for TLF. This paper introduces a multiobjective optimisation approach for the process design of a single-pass, multi-part turning process. Two objectives are considered simultaneously; the first is related to the economics of the process, specifically maximising the throughput. The second objective aims at minimising the deviations of the dimensions of the produced parts from the target value. The non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm (NSGA-II) is used to provide efficient solutions. The effectiveness of the proposed multiobjective approach is demonstrated through an illustrative example.
