Abstract: This paper aims to assess the penetration level and the key management issues during the implementation of information systems and technologies (IST) in hospitals. To meet these goals we conducted a study using prospective questionnaire provided by the GESITI project (GESITI, 2013a, 2013b). The results helped us to summarise the challenges in IST management in Bulgarian hospitals as well as to identify the critical points during the IST implementation there. Several recommendations and implications for future research were defined at the end of the study. The aim of the paper is to present the managerial situation in hospitals in the north-eastern planning region in Bulgaria with a focus on IST implementation situation there.
