Abstract: In flat plate floor system, due to variation of slab panel and loading pattern, various sizes of column within same thickness of slab are designed. Variation of column size is also used in high rise building in different floors within same type flat plate. In both cases punching shear capacity of flat plate is calculated by the same type of code equation. Code equations for punching strength of concrete do not consider column size or dimension as a parameter. In the present study, the effect of column size in punching shear behaviour of flat plate is identified by numerical finite element study of multi-panel flat plate. The load carrying capacity of multi panel flat plate having various column sizes is also compared with various codes of prediction. Normalised punching shear strength decreases with increase of column size is obtained in this study.
